The Barn

The Barn is located at the Christwood Boulevard Campus and provides a sanctuary for both abandoned domestic animals and native Louisiana fauna that are non-releasable because of permanent injuries sustained in the wild.

For many, the most beloved facility on our campus is our unique Barn. Under the guidance of Margaret deLaureal, The Barn offers a safe and nurturing environment for children to observe and interact with animals and provides an appreciation and context for their place in the world.

Those in fifth grade and above have the unique opportunity of spending lunchtime at The Barn, among a variety of more than 25 native and domestic animal friends.

The Barn’s open-air classroom provides a nonlinear, interactive learning environment for all grade levels. The second grade visits The Barn weekly to learn about native flora and fauna, environmental conservation, and Louisiana wetlands through hands-on lessons.

A peaceful place for students to relax and have a restorative moment in and with nature.

The Barn is licensed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to operate as an educational facility.

The Barn provides permanent sanctuary to more than 25 animals, including a pelican, a barred owl and a screech owl, an American kestrel (small falcon), a Mississippi kite, and rabbits and ducks.

Barn Happenings

The Barn at CES is happy to offer our Barn Ambassador Training Program once again!

With more than 20 animals representing 13 different species—each requiring special care, feeding, and handling—there’s a lot to learn and plenty of fun to be had!

As a Barn Ambassador (open to MS and US students only), you’ll play an important role in teaching others how to interact with each species in a safe, respectful, and caring way. Participants will receive in-depth training on animal anatomy, dietary and habitat needs, proper handling techniques, and how to recognize signs of stress specific to each species.

To become certified as an ambassador for a particular animal, students must complete a minimum of 10 training sessions for that species. Students may choose which species they’d like to work with—participation with all animals is not required.

Interested students should submit the application below to Margaret de Laureal ([email protected]) by September 15. We look forward to another exciting season of learning, caring, and connecting with animals!
