THEATER

The CES theater program seeks to lay a foundation for multidisciplinary practice in theater and performing arts, and encourages and challenges our students through training and performance.  We offer multiple opportunities to participate as performers or as crew for our two major annual productions; the CES Playback Improvisational ensemble; the theater and performance class production; and our speech team.

Big Fish

Big Fish is a fantastical, heartwarming musical that follows the life of Edward Bloom, a traveling salesman whose larger-than-life stories captivate everyone around him, especially his loving wife, Sandra. But their son, Will, about to become a father himself, is determined to uncover the truth behind his father’s epic tales. As Will embarks on a journey to understand the man behind the myth, Big Fish explores the power of storytelling, family bonds, and the search for identity.
Based on the celebrated novel by Daniel Wallace and the acclaimed film directed by Tim Burton with a screenplay by John August, Big Fish features a soaring score, unforgettable characters, and a blend of humor and heartfelt emotion. Join us for an extraordinary theatrical experience that celebrates the joy of life, the importance of family, and the beauty of the stories we tell.
Regardless of whether students wish to pursue studies in theater arts after upper school, the skills students develop in problem-solving, leadership, expressiveness, and teamwork are invaluable.

The theater and performance classes develop vocal and physical expressiveness, action-oriented acting technique, improvisation, mask character improvisation, acting classical text, musical theater, monologue, scene study, playwriting, and theater composition. The Theater Tech and Costuming courses complete the program.

Our students are the designers who build the sets, make the costumes, light the stage, and check the sound. Under the supervision of directors and faculty, the students are the leads in every aspect of our productions.

We are a charter member of the International Thespian Society Troupe 8387 and attend both state and national conferences, where students participate in workshops, present monologues, and meet with other theater enthusiasts from all over the country.
