The Visual Arts program is designed to develop the student’s personal art-making skills and knowledge of a wide range of media.
The early childhood art program is geared toward motivating and challenging children to independently express their ideas, thoughts, and feelings through the use of an ever-changing variety of materials. During class, the children enjoy and take pride in their work, while also using correct art vocabulary. Many great artists are studied, including Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Dale Chihuly, John Audubon, George Rodrigue, Clementine Hunter, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Jackson Pollock, to name a few.
In lower school, students meet once a week for visual art. Students explore a variety of media, processes, and techniques. Individual expression and creative problem solving are emphasized in combination with the study of famous artworks and artists.
In Middle School, students meet two to three times per week for visual art. The program provides students with challenging, relevant, and varied learning experiences at increasingly higher levels. Each student builds a strong foundation through instruction of art production, art history, art criticism, and aesthetics.
Upper School students are required to take one full year of fine arts. They may select to take more than one year, and may take as many as four years. In addition, AP Art History is offered.
