New Multi-Purpose Building

We are proud to announce our plans for the construction of a new multi-purpose classroom and gymnasium building on the Christwood Boulevard Campus. The new building is the culmination of two years of planning and fundraising by our Board of Trustees, and because of their successful efforts, we anticipate the building to be ready for occupancy as we begin the next school year in the fall of 2020.

Designed by Fauntleroy Latham Weldon Barré (fl+WB Architects, APC), in conjunction with McMath Construction, the planned 27,000-square-foot building will serve as a gathering space for the entire student body and will include three fully-equipped and large-scale STEM classrooms, five conventional classrooms, and a 1,000-plus capacity, air-conditioned gymnasium, plus locker rooms and offices for coaches, teachers, and administrators.

Academics

The new building will boast three STEM and five traditional classrooms along with administrative and faculty collaboration spaces.

Athletics

A fully-enclosed gymnasium with hardwood floors and a regulation-sized court that includes retractable bleacher seating will also feature locker rooms, a concession area, restrooms, coaches’ offices, and large-scale storage.

All-Purpose

With 1,000-plus capacity, the new gymnasium will fulfill the need for an adaptable space that can host the entire Christ Episcopal School community. From all-school eucharists to Grandparents Day and commencement, the school will now have a functional and beautiful gathering space.

Frequently Asked Questions

How I can stay informed about the building progress?

Regular updates will be communicated to all stakeholders, including families, faculty and staff, and supporters of the “I’m In” Capital Campaign via email and social media.

What grades will benefit from the new building?

Situated between the track and the Dathel Fine Arts Center, this new building will effectively bridge the athletic and academic zones of the campus. As such, the academic wings will primarily serve High School and Junior High students because of proximity. However, to take full advantage of the specialized equipment and technology offered in the large STEM labs, we anticipate opportunities for Lower School students to participate in enhanced learning and project days.

Students from all CBC divisions will benefit through their PE classes and team practices as overcrowding in the current gymnasium is relieved. Additionally, the new gym capacity will allow the school to host tournaments and playoff games that we previously could not accommodate. The Christ Episcopal School Parent Association and the Athletic Booster Club volunteers will be pleased to have long-wished-for chair and table storage.

When will construction begin? Completion date?

Absent any unforeseen conditions or circumstances, construction is anticipated to begin this fall. The building is expected to be operational for the 2020-2021 school year with planned occupancy for August 2020.

How much will this project cost and how is it being funded?

The preliminary cost estimate based on the schematic design documents is approximately $3.7 million. The remarkably successful “I’m In” Capital Campaign has raised $4,514,051 so far, with some of those funds already expended to provide for the security upgrades and internal roadwork that were also part of the campaign.

As we look forward to our next 35 years, we are grateful to so many parents, grandparents, and friends of CES for their generosity and support. Without your trust and dedication, we know that none of this would be possible. Thanks to all for your enduring commitment to Christ Episcopal School.
