Don't forget to place your Sally Foster order by  September 10th. You can order on line or turn in the packets distributed to your child. CES receives 50% of the value of the orders so this is a great fundraiser as well as an opportunity to stock up on quality wrapping paper and other items. We appreciate your help!

August 14, 2008

Welcome Back!
(Did we ever really leave?)
It was so much fun to see everyone this morning all smiles and new outfits. It's amazing the growth that takes place over the summer! We'll spend the next couple days getting reacquainted and finding our bearings before we hit the ground running on Monday. Please take some time to ease yourselves and your children back into the routine. We're here if you need us, so please don't hesitate to call. Problems have solutions, and anything can be fixed. Just take a deep breath and enjoy.

We would like to welcome the following new students to the CES family.

Caroline Ahrons, Johnny Anderson, Levan Barlow, Jack Bevolo, Sally Blackmon, Emmy Blessey, Mikayla Bowles, Emily Brown, Chet Caldarera, Catherine Caulfield, Ben Chandler, Charley Chehardy, Chloe Chehardy, Christen Chehardy, Connor Cloutman, Kristen Cloutman, Billy Colomb, Cassie Covey, Daniel Croxton, Cameron Darr, Maren Davis, Courtney Deynoodt, Dylan Deynoodt, William Ditta, Shawn Doyle, Emerson du Passage, Brennan Finley, Mia Gordon, Elizabeth Gray, Sydney Guice, Justin Guidry, Ian Guidry, Brian Harrell, Libby Heebe, Anna Hernandez, Leighton Hewitt, Anna Hoffstadt, Lucy Holzhalb, Ella Hysom, Trevon Johnson, Gracie Lagarde, Forrest Lagarde, Cora Lang, Tate LeDoux, Brennan LeJeune, Vageli Liokis, Mason Lyons, Taylor MacEachern, Jillian Martin, Hailey McCance, John Player, Emory Powell, Reese Richards, Joe Robinson, Andie Rousse, Ethan Satterlee, Russ Savoie, Samantha Schultz, Laura Slatten, Cameron Smith, Libby Stalter, Macaulay Thompson, Jackson Truitt, Sarah Kate Valliant, Lucy Vanderbrook, Matthew Verges, Jack White, Chloe Williams, and Abby Zeller.

New faculty/staff members include Elise Hogben, Elise MacMaster, Allison Smith, Mary Lyn Rawls, Megan Miller, Julie Boudreaux, Marci Elter, Shelly Krieger, Kelly Wiedeman, Ruth Siporski, and Angela Nunez.

New members of the Board of Trustees include Anne Bailey, Erika Briggs and John Dubreuil.

The new Rector of Christ Episcopal Church is Rev'd Tom Blackmon.

And last, but certainly not least, a big WELCOME BACK to Sharon O'Meallie.

Many, many changes, but it's all good. Just hang in there and we'll guide you through this maze. We promise in two weeks it will be routine. God bless.

The Good News
The Good News was mailed last week. The bad news about The Good News are a few errors which we would like to correct. Two names were left off the Board of Trustees listing: Anne Bailey and John Dubreuil. Also, Erika Briggs' name was misspelled. We apologize for this oversight.

Sports News
• Tryouts for cross-country (grades 2-8) will be held on Tuesday, August 19th from 3-4:00.
• Tryouts for girls volleyball will be held on Wednesday, August 20th from 3-4:30 for JV (grades 5-6) and on Thursday, August 21st from 3-4:30 for V (grades 7-8)
• Tryouts for flag football will be held on Wednesday, August 20th from 3-4:30 for JV (grades 5-6) and on Thursday, August 21st from 3-4:30 for V (grades 7-8)

CESPA Coffee
The CESPA Coffee for parents of students in first grade will be on Tuesday, August 19th at 8:30 a.m. at Christwood. Second grade parents will have their Coffee on Thursday, August 21st, 8:30 a.m. at Christwood. This is an excellent opportunity to get together in a casual setting to have any questions answered and to get to know the parents of your child's classmates. This is not mandatory, so please don't stress if you can't make it.

Lunch with Mr. Homer
The tradition continues. Please join Mr. Homer as he prepares lunch (dogs and fixins) for our students at the ECC on Friday, August 29th and at the CBC on Friday, September 5th. This will take place during your child's regular lunch period so please come if you can.

Emergency Closure
Since we are in hurricane season (YIKES), please review your handbook (page 33) on emergency closure. Basically, it's quite simple. Any time that St. Tammany Schools are closed, so are we. Channel 4 television and WLL radio (870 AM) will also be used to announce school closings. Last year we contracted with SchoolReach to enhance our communications. It is imperative that all information is up to date as we call every number we have on file for our students to make announcements. Please listen to the message from us as it is not necessary to return the call which clogs the entire process.

Got Some Old Tennis Balls?
Ms. Sparkman-Boyd is requesting old tennis balls to use on stools in her classroom. If you have any, please send them to the middle school office.

Lunch Program Update
The lunch program will begin the Tuesday after Labor Day. We will be sending menus home in the next few days if you would like to place an order. The due dates are important as we contract with an outside vendor, and extra lunches are not ordered.

Subscribe to the Thursday Newsletter!!
Please make sure to sign up to receive this newsletter every Thursday via email. Go to the school's website (www.christepiscopalschool.org) and under the News banner you will be able to subscribe. We will make paper copies until the Thursday after Labor Day. After that, you will need to go into the appropriate school office to pick up a copy if that is what you want. Everything you need to know about CES is located on our website so take some time to review its content.

If there is any information which you would like to have published in the weekly newsletter, please forward it to Pam Sims (in a Word document) pam@christepiscopalschool.org by Wednesday afternoon.

Please Let Us Know...
If you have any changes or corrections to your personal information which need to be amended, please contact Pam Sims (871-9902, extension 208). It is most important to have accurate data on our students. The school directory will be published in the next few weeks so don't forget to make those changes.

Chapel Schedule
Please note this differs from the Parent and Student Handbook. Lower school attends Chapel at 8:20 on Monday and Friday and middle school attends on Tuesday and Friday. Kindergarten and pre-kindergarten chapel will be announced at a later date.

Cub Scout Information
If your son (grades 1-5) is interested in Cub Scouting, you and your son are invited to an Open House on Sunday, August 24th at 6:00 p.m. in the Commons Room (next to Christ Episcopal Church). There will be a short presentation by the Pack Leader and then the Den Leaders will be available to answer your questions. The meeting should only last an hour. CES has a strong program of Scouting, and we would be honored to have your son participate. Contact Bert Duvic at BertD@maxderbes.com or Paul VanDeventer at paulvandeventer@msn.com if you cannot attend and wish to join.

That's it for Now
Once again, please don't hesitate to call if you have any questions or problems. Appointments with Mr. Homer are set up through Pam Sims. We are here to make your child's school experience memorable, and we invite you to partner with us to make it happen. Just take a deep breath.

2008-09 School Calendar

The calendar of events on the web site is the most up-to-date source of information regarding events that are happening at school. For those of you who would like to print out a monthly calendar with school holidays, etc. on it, please click here to download.

Thank You to Everyone Who Contributed to the 2007-2008 Annual Giving Fund.

Contributions to the 2007-2008 Annual Giving Fund "Celebrate Each Student" totalled $195,700! An increase over last year. We also so excited that our parent participation percentage increased from 46% to 51% of parents. Thank you to everyone who made the campaign a success!

These funds bridge the gap between the actual cost of a CES education and the tuition charged. They are essential to the financial health of the school.

Be on the lookout for the 2008-2009 Annual Giving appeal which has been mailed out to all CES community members. We hope to increase our participation this year to include 100% of our parents. With everyone's help we can continue to make CES the best learning environment for our children.  For more information, click here.
