Often cited by former students as a favorite memory at Christ Episcopal, the third grade social studies program exposes students to a diverse and exciting world through continent-by-continent studies encompassing the whole year. The students first refine their map and globe skills through activities and group work. The program then carefully integrates literature, science units, cultural activities, and historical accounts as the focus shifts among different world cultures. At the end of the year, the students’ research, cooperative learning, and oral presentation skills are put on display in the annual World’s Fair. Each small group selects a country to study and prepares a cultural presentation to be presented before a large group.

The third grade science program expands on previous lessons in life and physical sciences with greater depth and a continued emphasis on developing skills and hands-on experimentation. Units in the physical sciences include the solar system, the moon, plate tectonics and Earth's layers. The students begin to classify animals by their bone structure, as well as studying the Great Barrier Reef, the African Grassland, the Amazon Rainforest, and Earth's other diverse ecosystems. The scientific method is introduced, and students work individually and in cooperative group activities to design experiments, record data, draw conclusions, and write and present reports. Outside speakers and fieldtrips to the Aquarium of the Americas and Global Wildlife help to infuse the program with excitement and discovery.

Critical thinking and problem solving serve as the central focus of the third grade math program. Math is presented as a relevant life skill, and students apply new concepts in creative games and computer programs. These new skills include the computing the four basic operations of whole numbers, defining perimeter, area, and volume of geometric shapes, and writing and using fractions and decimals. There is a continued emphasis on transferring these skills to daily situations involving money and time.

   The third grade language arts program devotes considerable time to integrating new and familiar concepts to develop reading and writing skills. The mechanics of writing-spelling, grammar, and handwriting-are polished, and the students learn to build cohesive paragraphs to describe and persuade on a wide range of subjects.  The students enjoy the continuing storyline of the "Caught'ya" series, in which teachers post short paragraphs each day for students to correct grammar, mechanics, and vocabulary. The reading component of the program includes oral presentation, group reading, and independent readings in class and at home.
