5th Grade Language Arts
The fifth grade language arts program seeks to expose students to examples of effective, creative writing in all genres, while honing the technical skills needed to analyze these works and discover their own voice and style. The writing component includes efforts in expository, news, poetry and letter writing. Additionally, students read and understand the merits of good beginnings, appropriate word choice, conflict and character development and figurative language in the books they read. |

6th Grade Language Arts

Students are exposed to a variety of texts in the sixth grade language arts program and continue to build their writing skills in a variety of situations. Novels, poems, dramas, and classical mythology texts build reading comprehension and analysis skills such as interpreting imagery and figurative language, recognizing character development, and understanding the importance of audience. Students then apply the same skills to their own writing endeavors. The sixth grade program also includes a web site construction unit to showcase the research efforts of the students and build a greater understanding of the importance of technology in communicating ideas. |

7th Grade Language Arts
The seventh grade language arts program continues to build on the students' literary analysis skills, while placing greater emphasis on the mechanics of persuasive writing. Students construct arguments with a thesis statement, and writing workshops help ensure effective paragraph structure and transition. Continued work with web site construction, responding to fictional pieces, and oral presentation help develop students who are able to communicate effectively in a variety of ways. |

Students use a workshop approach to further develop their "literate voices". Students will experience various genres of literature and will experiment with writing activities including narrative and descriptive paragraphs, response to literature, essays, letter writing and creative writing. Whole class activities include mini-lessons that address needs of correct usage, mechanics, grammar and spelling. Students create portifolios which are an insightful tool in developing their strengths and improving their weaknesses. |
