It's Picnic Time....Again!
The CESPA 2010 Back-to-School Family Picnic
"Good old-fashioned family-fun and fellowship of CES families"

The CESPA 2010 Family Picnic has been rescheduled and will take place Sunday, September 12th from 3pm - 6pm at the CBC!

You bring the food! We provide the fun! Yes, don't forget to pack those picnic baskets! Also, feel free to bring blankets, chairs, frisbees and footballs too. Bottled water, snowballs and popcorn will be provided at the event.

Get ready for some good, old-fashioned fun! The CESPA Meetings & Events Committee has been working hard to make this an exciting, fun-filled family event, so please be sure to join us!

Some of the events planned are as follows:

Create Your Family Pennant - each family decorates a pennant with their family name and stakes it in the ground near their picnic area. Activities around the grounds will merit different colored ribbons for participation. As these ribbons are collected, they can be tied on to the designated ring on the family pennant. There are seven different colored ribbons for the kids/families to collect! Should be lots of fun!

Photo Opportunity - We'll have some creative fun for families to capture moments at this booth. Be sure to bring your camera! We'll have volunteers available to take the photos with your camera!

Classic Races - 300-400 pm Sack Races, 400-500 pm Three-Legged Races, 500-600 pm Wheelbarrow Races (each activity awards different color ribbon)

Relay Races - 300-430pm Popcorn Relay Race, 430-600pm Flag Tag Relay Race (each activity awards different color ribbon)

We'll see you there!

Parent Open House Update
Thanks to all parents who took the time to attend the Open House at the ECC and CBC. Communication among all constituents is of the utmost importance. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you ever have any questions or concerns. Individual Parent/Teacher conferences are on November 19th.

Birthday Books
Please see the attached list of students who will be receiving Birthday Books for August and September. Students at the CBC will be receiving their books on Tuesday, September 14th at 12:00 and ECC students will receive their books on Friday, September 17th at 9:00 a.m.

CBC Parking Request (Please Help Us)
We are asking parents to park in the front grass lot when coming to school for athletic activities in the afternoon. The parking lot in front of the athletic field by the gym is for faculty/staff until 4:30 and the back side of the gym is a no parking zone. Parents are double parking, and kids are bolting in and out of cars to get to practice. Teachers have been blocked in for 15 minutes trying to locate parents to move their cars not to mention the danger this situation presents to the children. We appreciate your cooperation.

Congratulations!
Third grader, Hal Fox, and second grader, Jillian Martin, both have their work exhibited in the "Reflections of Home" quilt at the East Baton Rouge museum until November of this year for the commemoration of Katrina. The quilt was also exhibited at the Smithsonian and will be part of a traveling exhibition of quilts throughout the year. The quilt is sponsored by CIAO! (Children's International Art Outreach) a nonprofit organization based in DC. Both Fox and Martin were displaced from their homes in Lakeview, New Orleans on 2005 and created their pieces for the quilt a year after when they had relocated to the Northshore with their families. For information on CIAO, please go to the following website www.ciaoart.org.

Ice Cream for Sale!
Beginning the Friday after Labor Day, ice cream will be sold at the CBC!!! Prices will range from $1.00-$2.00 and with profits being used to help defer the cost of a high school class trip in March. Hershey's is the provider. Please see the attached flyer for selections.

Aftercare Changes
If your child is not picked up by the end of carpool, he/she will need to go to aftercare. This goes for middle school students as well as our younger children. If your child is participating in a sport which takes place at a later time, he/she will still need to go to aftercare; however, there will not be a charge. There is a minimum one hour charge so if it is not your intent to pay for aftercare, please make arrangements to pick up at the appropriate time.

Please know that we are putting this practice in place for the safety of all students and appreciate your assistance.

Keep Covington Beautiful
The Keep Covington Beautiful organization is having a drive in partnership with Trex Company and Winn Dixie. Beginning on September 20th-April 15th bins will be located at the lower and middle schools to collect clean and dry plastic grocery bags, zip lock bags, plastic department store bags, newspaper sleeves, plastic dry cleaning bags, over-wrap for toilet paper or paper towels, case wrap for water bottles, and stretch film (no household saran wrap). Only the following colors may be recycled: clear, light or translucent yellow, light or translucent orange and light or translucent red. The following colors may not be recycled: blue, black or green.

The school delivering the most bags will receive a bench made from Trex lumber to be used anywhere on school grounds. The winner will be announced on April 22, 2011.

Some info on Trex: The Trex Company utilizes approximately 300 million pounds of used polyethylene (plastic grocery store bags and plastic film wrap) ever year to create its composite lumber product, reducing the amount of plastic film taken to landfills locally and across the country.
